Research Associates (2 posts) in electrical tomography and microwave sensors for multiphase flow measurement

Applications are invited for a position of Research Assistant/Associate working on joint industry / academia project entitled “Detection of explosive substances by tomographic inspection using neutron and gamma-ray spectroscopy” (DISTINGUISH). The work is part of the DISTINGUISH consortium consisting of three of the UK’s leading universities and is funded by the EPSRC under the Think Crime initiative. The objective is to research, design and build a system to enable efficient screening of baggage and goods in transit. The research of the consortium combines nuclear instrumentation, nuclear physics and 3D tomography. Applicants will have first degrees in Engineering or a related science subject and a PhD in a subject of relevance to this application, for example nuclear physics, industrial tomography, industrial process simulation or digital data processing. This post is part of an ongoing expansion of research in this field. Experience of applied scanning methods in homeland security applications would be an advantage but is not essential. The post is available immediately for a period of 15 months.
Starting salary will be £26,666 p.a. (increases to £27,466 from May 2008).
