  About VCIPT

The research strategy is based on mapping out the landscape of existing tomography research and identifying common areas of interest for exploration, including:-

Process Tomography process applications (such as grinding, separation, mixing or flow) in process sectors offering particular challenges (such as high temperature, metal walled vessels, intrinsic safety requirements etc). These applications address generic themes in the field of process measurement and control.
Process Tomography development of sensing modalities(such as impedance, capacitance, optical, ultrasound etc). Modalities are developed from initial proof of concept through to meeting the speed, cost and sensitivities required for industrial application.
Process Tomography fundamentals of tomography (such as algorithms, data fusion, new sensor strategies or circuit improvements).

Research will be progressed by implementing a portfolio of high quality projects that, when taken together, most productively advance the field.

The objective of the research strategy is to manage research such that proposals: -

Process Tomography have the maximum chance of being funded;
Process Tomography achieve maximum leverage for the resources of the VCIPT and its members;
Process Tomography move forward on at least two dimensions of the research landscape;
Process Tomography develop the research landscape and efficiently explore it with the minimum duplication of effort and the highest possible quality of science and engineering.

The implementation of the strategy will be based on the formulation of a list of projects through joint discussion, centred on the aspirations and skills of the core academic cohort. This will be reviewed by the technical panel who may circulate a short list of projects, in the context of an updated research landscape, for discussion and selection at a consortium meeting.

Collaboration with universities or technology providers outside the VCIPT grouping is also possible (within the terms of any pre-existing agreements between The University of Manchester and Leeds).

The funding into the VCIPT provided by subscriptions (see sections 6-8) is required to support the essential infrastructure: -

for office support; a part-time co-ordinator; to facilitate meetings; and, priming of new core projects through studentships, and or research assistantships.
